Breaks
If you're short on time and money but in need
of escape, then a city break is just the ticket. Even if you're
a city dweller in this country, skipping off to a foreign
clime will clear the cobwebs and breathe new life into your
bones. Just imagine, sitting in Venice with a cappuccino,
or hanging out in Barcelona visiting the Picasso museum or
strolling down Las Ramblas, it certainly beats the norm. here
are five destinations to whet your appetite.
Venice
Venice is a city associated with romance, of
Gondoliers singing love songs as they steer their passengers
through the network of canals, of St Mark's square and the
beautiful Basilica rising up from it, of Italians and visitors
sitting and relaxing over a coffee or some wonderful pasta
in one of the abundant restaurants or cafes. Venice is a perfect
weekend destination: relaxed, charming, besotting, and with
enough galleries, museums and sightseeing to keep you busy
from dawn until dusk. If you're planning a proposal or celebrating
an anniversary, this is still the place to come.
Barcelona
Barcelona is perhaps the most exciting city
in Spain, crammed full of things to do and boasting incredible
architecture, compelling museums, stylish boutiques, and above
all, an energy that is unique to this sophisticated city.
At the heart of Barcelona lies Las Ramblas, a tree-lined street
where people stroll, looking at the shops or hanging out in
one of the many cafes or restaurants. Bars are open very late
and the nightlife is as diverse and lively as the city itself.
Barcelona is a city that satisfies on every level: stimulating,
beautiful, accessible and exciting, it's not to be missed.
Monte Carlo
The Grimaldi family dynasty have ruled this
small principality on the French Riviera for 700 years and
their home, the castle, serves as the focal point in Monte
Carlo. To the South of the principality, the Mediterranean
glistens against the blue sky and behind the mountains form
a striking backdrop. Between the mountains and the sea the
sophisticated, exclusive shops and restaurants play host to
the rich and famous, who enjoy Monte Carlo's mild winters
and warm summers, cosmopolitan atmosphere, casinos and of
course, tax exemption! If you want to get dressed up and enjoy
a chic, affluent atmosphere in beautiful surroundings, Monte
Carlo is for you.
Berlin
The capital of reunited Germany, Berlin is
a city with lots to offer. Apart from the wealth of museums,
monuments and galleries, Berlin has a flourishing cultural
scene with endless choice, whether you want to go clubbing
through the night, attend the opera or simply enjoy some fantastic
beer in one of the bars or pubs. Try the Winterfeldtplatz
with its wonderful, bustling market and lively bars, or Hackesche
Hofe for its profusion of restaurants and clubs, and if you
really want to be kept busy, go 6-17 February when the renowned
International Film Festival takes place.
